We are recruiting for a Planner to join the Pinellas County Planning Department's Long Range Planning Team. This is a progressive group of professional urban planners primarily focused on updating the policies, standards and regulations related to the County's long-term goals for targeted growth and quality redevelopment in a complex, urbanized region of coastal Florida. The Planning Department often takes a team-approach to completing projects in a studio environment where ideas are shared and creativity is expressed. Professional initiative is expected while work schedule flexibility is often considered.

The position requires professional urban planning work supporting the varied programs in Long Range Planning, including but not limited to maintaining and updating the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code; preparing and updating special area plans and studies; and providing assistance to the historic preservation program and transportation planning-related initiatives. Planners assist in completing project tasks assigned by project managers. The position will carry out a wide variety of diverse and complex planning analyses and projects, and will assist in preparing professional written reports, policy documents and technical analyses based on sound planning principles. Team work, creativity, organization and collaboration skills are required.


Comprehensive and/or master planning experience; including knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of urban planning
Ability to present ideas and findings clearly and concisely in written, oral or graphic form
Ability to participate in complex planning studies or elements thereof, and to analyze information and formulate substantive recommendations based upon such studies
Experience or special skill sets in such areas as urban design, graphic design, environmental planning, historic preservation, public involvement, etc.
Technical skills related to data and document management, data analysis, principles of GIS, use of graphic tools to create professional documents, etc.


Master's or higher-level degree with major course work in urban planning, urban design, landscape architecture, public administration, law, civil engineering, historic preservation, statistics; or
Bachelor's degree with major course work in urban planning, urban design, landscape architecture, public administration, law, civil engineering, historic preservation, statistics and 1 year of professional work experience in urban planning; or
6 years professional work experience in urban planning; or
An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience

Additional Requirement:

Possession and maintenance of a valid Florida Driver's License.
